'00s list

Everyone's making lists of their top [insert thing you are interested in] of the decade. I was thinking of doing a Movie or book one, but I was thirteen at the start of this decade and you really shouldn't trust thirteen-year-old Todd's judgement on these things.

With that in mind, here's my top five sandwiches I ate this decade (in no particular order)-
- "The Poor and Lazy" (2007-2009) - Cheese and/or tomato sauce.
- "The Future Heart Attack" (2005) - from top to bottom: Toast, barbecue sauce, cheese, bacon, egg, bacon, cheese, barbecue sauce, toast.
- "Dad's school lunches" (1999-2003) - Homemade bread, cheese, lettuce, ham.
- "Leftover Sandwich" (2000-2009) - Various (notable editions: roast vegetables, chicken and gravy; Cold sausages; Stir-fried rice.
- "Peanut Butter and Bacon Sandwich" (2003-2009) - Good if the bacon is hot and melts the peanut butter but still good if it's been sitting in your bag half the day, as I learned at Teachers College.

Thank you 'Ohs' (I refuse to call them "The Noughties" because that is fucking stupid) I will kinda miss you, but not really, to be honest.

2010: The year of Todd.

Things thathappened this week.

On Monday I went to an AFL game! It was The Collingwood Magpies vs the St Kilda Saints (how wonderfully original!) and the stadium was filled to near-capacity. Combining the team-size and ball of rugby, the ball-punching of volleyball, the running-limitations of netball, the fashion sense of lower-class suburbia ad the sing-alongs of 1920s Music Halls, AFL is easty to follow if one makes an effort. It reminds me of playing backyard cricket (or drinking games) with people who have a long-developed and -cemented set of house-rules: once you get past the perplexing bits (instead of lineouts, the ref toses the ball back onto the field like a bride with a bouquet) you can find yourself not only understanding the game, but enjoying it.
I'm constantly amused that the colloquial name for the Collingwood team - used by supporters and the press - is "Pies". Supporters can oft be seen sporting official mini-banners reading "GO PIES!" (I want to get one to send the guys at Gregor. Dave and Andrew love pies) and the headline the day after the match read "Saints Smash Pies", which is hilarious out of context.

Yesterday I flooded the bathroom and part of the hallway. The pipe that all the dirty water comes out of is meant to be pointed into the shower/bath when one puts a load on. I didn't. I then went out for an hour.
I mopped up 4 buckets of water from the tiny bathroom and used the top of a broom to pull lots of brown, stinky water from the carpet. The Carpet went squish when walked on. Thankfuly my flatmates find it more funny than disaterous. Especially seeing as how one of the fltmates spent a couple of hours, once everyone had gone to bed, pulling up the carpet and removing the sodden, reeking felt beneath. We'll replace that and get a rug doctor in the weekend. Oh, aren't I clever?

I will never work in this town again

Did my last stand up gig in Christchurch a few hours ago. I MCed the night to varying degrees of success. The highlight was being roasted by Bigger Than Beetles: who sampled bits of my previous sets, remixing them as a funky, bass-heavy a-capella number. I also finished up by running through the acts while doing roly-polies around the stage. Suffice it to say, I had a blast.
Not long to go before phase one of the big shift. Oamaru on December 22nd, then Melbourne on January 12th.
In a word: Meep.

Here is a thing. I will do it, as others have. Now you might also.

1. I'll respond with something random about you.
2. I'll challenge you to try something.
3. I'll pick a color that I associate with you.
4. I'll tell you something I like about you.
5. I'll tell you my first/clearest memory of you.
6. I'll tell you what animal you remind me of.
7. I'll ask you something I've always wanted to ask you.
8. If I do this for you, you must post this in your journal.

To those who are still waiting for my Art Meme stuff: It's coming, and I apologise...for everything.

What I did:

Christmas Eve: From 3.30 - 7.30ish I was at the Dux with maddogdamo and scabbypants drinking, drawing and sneaking Scabbypants into the mens room to be The Toilet Oracle. I had already gone in, done my business, come out, gone back in to check for the all-clear, surreptitiously washed my hands in order to start the Question Asking and gone out again when droves of people swarmed the bathroom ultimately trapping Scabbypants in a cubicle. When finally she made it out she accused us of abandoning her...I guess we kinda did.
We then discovered our western side of a shared table was being taken over by invaders from the east [end of the table]. It soon became standing room only (Jaysus! It's Christmas Eve people! Shouldn't you be with your family?) Therefore we high tailed it to mine to watch Bill Bailey, Drink, discuss the quirks of predictive text and eat biscuits.

Christmas Day: Pretty Quiet. Opened a present that my folks sent up. Dad had accidentally taken it Deer Hunting so the chocolate bars were squashed and the gift vouchers crumpled. Later, over the phone, he said I was lucky they weren't covered in blood. Had Christmas dinner at Dave's place with him and his Parents. We then watched a Korean movie called Memories of Murder. It was quite good.

Boxing Day: Attended an annual Boxing Day Picnic at Mona Vale, once more with Dave and many others. Played cricket, where I fell down a bank into a thicket of bamboo and leaped painfully into several bushes. Moving onto Ultimate Frisbee (possibly some comic book reinvention. ha. ha. Sorry) where I demonsrated my ability to jump - occasionally at the right time, less occasionally landing on my feet. Throw a ball into the mix and I am sore and smell of sweat and potting mix.

Verdict: Pretty good Christmas really. Just a lot different. Mum and Dad come up on Friday for some more Christmas.

Okay, so many things happened today. I'll start with the easy to type/write about and move up the eponential curve to the dificult to explain.
 - I bought a plier set, 14G wire and 20G wire today. Puppets shall soon take shape.
 - Worked the Art Centre Guide job today. I'm down to one day now that my 5-day/week contract (Super-Workathon 2006) has ended.
 - Talked to scabbypants after work. From 2.00 to 4.00. We just stood by the Bosch-esque fence/sculpture by the market and shot the breeze about hangovers, vomit, Buster Keaton, stand up comedy, Urban Golf and so many other things. Time went really fast. "What? we've been here for over an hour!" "Holy shit! So did you ever see that thing about..."etc.
 - While at work I calculated something: I work as a Guide on Sundays + Christmas Eve is a Sunday + The Arts Centre is open Christmas Eve = I'm working on Christmas Eve.
This wouldn't be too bad if my parents weren't in Oamaru for Christmas. I can't get there, they can't come here as they are with my 80 year old Grandmother. I know that to some of you guys this doesn't seem too big a problem but, while I'm not big on the whole 'spirit of christmas' gig, the holiday has always been one of those special family things. This year will be the first time in 20 years I have not spent Christmas with my family. It is also the first time in 26 or so years (correct me if I'm wrong, Reece) that my brother will not spend Christmas with us. So the first time in those 26 years that the family won't be together (save for Dad, Mum and her mother) for christmas. It's actually kinda sad.
Soo I'm keeping my spirits up by listening to BNL. And later, I may just watch The Incredibles. These always make things feel better.

I'm very tired, but I said I'd post and damn it, I wanna know what happens with the geckos. Today's section prompted by hilaire , with a little Artistic licence.

Half an hour later someone picks up the phone.
"Hello?" I say hastily, "I need a ticket to Deepest Darkest, Africa."
Deepest Darkest (Diepste het Donkerst in Dutch), located on the borders of Nigeria and Cameroon is the only remaining Duch-ruled colony and also a hotbed of Tarentola mauritanica activity. If Bosch was anywhere, it would be here.
Fortytwo hours have passed and I'm finally landing in Deepest Darkest, which is difficult for a plane to do as the colony isten hectares smaller than the vatican. The plus side to this is I can search most of the populated area as the plane coasts along the runway. Also, it's only twenty meeters from customs to my hotel.
I check myself in and drop my belongings in my room, marvelling at the tubercles of the Tarentola mauritanica resting on the bathroom mirror. I walk downstairs to the bar and show the barman Bosch's picture. I don't even need to ask where he is (which is just as well because I can't speak Dutch) as the dark-skinned barman, with fearful eyes, nods in the direction of...

I think that'll do for today. Where is the barman looking? Is it near or distant (as distant as 34 Ha, of course). Update will be sometime Saturday night.
It's scary how much the Dutch have influenced this story. WHile I oughtn't be planning in advance, there is another old Dutch guy who's name may pop up soon. That's all I'm saying, but I think some of the readers here may be able to figure out what that's about.
SHow finishes tomorrow. It's going great.

Rehearsal was pretty good tonight. Lots of good stuff. I did break the toaster though. In return it cut my little finger.
Part 3 of the interactive story coming up. If you read my posts (I'm so, so sorry) could you please leave a suggestion? To promote more spontenaety and diversity in the story. Todays suggestion by amphibious_one (sory, entomocephalous, you were just beaten out by alitteration)

If I followed him, I could find her. If I could get to her I could blow the lid of the whole trade. So follow Brian I did.
I shadowed him as he visited several stores, all pretty straight forward: Bread and Milk from the supermarket (he should have picked up the milk last - it would to be in his car all damn day. If he could do that, who knows what else he could be capable of?), the latest Pet magazines from a newspaper stand (apparently, Lhasa Apso is the newBichon Frisé) and a filled roll from the bakery around the corner. It was when he arrived at Briscoes that things went sour.
In the back corner of the store, amongst the platters and dinner sets Brian met with her. I may have been hiding in haberdashery but there was no mistaking Genevive Grain. She looked exactly the same as she did in New Caledonia: enough like the Briscoes Lady to fit in amongst the crockery, but there was that air about her: that nigh-indistinguishable something that can only come from Geckos.
I was expecting a routine swap - Gecks for Green, as the Geck-Runners would say - and I have a feeling so was Brian. But nothing could prepare me for what Genevive pulled from her handbag that day in Kitchenware...

What does Genevive have in her bag? I don't know, but you do....

I am currently reading The Prestige by Christopher Priest. I want to finish it before the Christopher Nolan adaptation is released later this year. Although now that I've pulled out of uni, that shouldn't be too hard.
Recorded some ads for RDU today and talked with the Production Guy about radio plays, DJs and weekly slots.
The short film I've been cast in shoots next week. It should be interesting. The Writer/Director has given each character a colour - mine being orange. This means I will spend most of the shoot eating orange food (she mentioned 'sanwitches with lots of different orange things in them' and never promised they'd taste good).

It's late. Been at Nic's drinking and watching our and Outwits' 48hr entries. Lots of stuff has happened recently. The thing I'm most proud of involves the girl most who read this blog have referred to as "The Blog Girl". I spent some time with her and some of her friends the other night and not once did I want to kill her new boyfriend - we actually got on really well. I see this as a great achievement and I now don't feel silly saying "I'm fine" when people ask me about her. She's one of my best friends and that's all and that's all I need/want from her.
Staying on the girls/neuroses front, last week I realised - halfway through my day - that I changed my fudge beat because a girl had not set up her market stall. The fact that she was the only reason I'd walk down that way made me feel kind of shallow. I confessed this to a couple of friends (on separate occasions) and they said it's perfectly normal. I don't know if this means it actually is fine or that everybody is shallow.
I ought to sleep. I'm really tired. Midsummer Night's Dream opens on the 17th at the Rep. This means there's less than 20 days untill I get a real camera! Rock.

Why are people angry?

Last Friday the whole flat went to Sumner. We drank tea at a place over the road from the cinema and, with tea in little polystyrene cups, we crossed the road and watched Walk The Line.
It was really great going out as a flat like that.
I started making my Gulliver costume today. I weaved (wove?) two Plastic Army-Men into my shoes so they stand on my feet. I was very excited about it but everyone in my flat was just, like, "mmhm" .(Sorry, I seem to have turned into a teenaged girl back there)
I also developed the red photos for my friend's birthday present, put them in a red photo album along with a poem I wrote which contained her name (1st letter of the first line, 2nd letter of the second line etc) and gave it to her. She liked it. I was pleased. And amazed that that was all, actually, it seems the whole 'getting over my friend' thing actually worked. I thought that the present may have been a bit much for 'just friends' but no, everything was fine and there weren't any stronger feelings than friendship on my part.
3Some opens in 12 days. On Sunday we will have a full cast again for the first time since, oh, first week of rehearsals...knock on wood [cannot find any wood so knocks on own head]

I was going to write about the past 3 days, which have been pretty damn cool, but I'm hot and tired, so I'll do that tomorrow. Instead I will write nothing in particular about likewise.
Often I have tried having Power [nanna] naps before doing stuff in the evenings. I have begun to think that maybe I am incapable of such tasks, as every time I have tried I have spent the allotted time in the dark, with my eyes closed yet thinking. So then I get up and do stuff, just as tired as before, only now I have several new ideas and beadhead.

Got up at 7.00am today to have join a bunch of good people for Breakfast to say bye to Luke...again. As a result, today has gone on for ages. That's what happens when you break routing and get up before 10.30: you get things done!
I've volunteered to do canta things...not sure what I could do yet. I am going to review a book they had in the office, but I'd like to do something more creative. I thought of doing a comic, but there are two drawbacks (hehe...drawbacks...because I'm talking about comics...which are drawn...and I said drawbacks...y'know?...heh...because it's almost the same...):
1) I would recieve a wave of hatemail (and hatebricks-to-the-head) from the multitude of ignorant readers who would no doubt accuse me of "Copying James Squires"
2) I don't think I could be consistently funny.
I thought of doing a serial, but do not have a plot so won't bring that up with the Ed. just yet.
While I'm here...Holy Cripes on Toast! 'Deserted Cities of the Heart' by '60s band Cream (Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton) is a FREAKIN' AWESOME SONG!
I still have about half a film of red things to fill...I'll do that tomorrow and saturday I guess. Well, I'll have to.
The other day I showed my flatmate some of my Fantasy Novel stuff...the notepad files with bits of backstory and plot, the two stories - explaining that they will, eventually, cross over - and the ream of drawings, designs, notes, maps and sketches I have compiled since late 2003. She seemed really enthusiastic about it, which got me all excited about the story again too. It was cool. Now there's another person in this world as excited as I am about Oophnooks. Yeah!
